Grid Master Release (GMR v.1.2) – Upgrade Announcement
February 20th, 2007 at 5:21 pm(mt) Media Temple is proud to announce the upcoming release of its second GRID system upgrade (GMR v.1.2). Combining another series of stability enhancements, micro-updates, end-user requests, bug fixes, and new features – this latest release signifies another major improvement to the overall (gs) Grid-Server system.
(GMR v.1.2) will begin deployment on production clusters inside the GRID Friday 03/02/2007. A scheduled maintenance notice will follow including the details and time of the version release.
Highlights of (GMR v.1.2)
——————————————————————
- Core count (800+). After the release of (GMR v.1.2), the combined processor cores in all Clusters will total over 800 and produce massive processing horsepower for customers.
- MySQL GridContainers (in private beta). As previously referenced in the detailed weblog article “Anatomy of MySQL on the GRID“, (mt) Media Temple has completely re-architected the MySQL system on the GRID. This gives each customer their own container server with dedicated resources, an industry first, that’s running an unshared copy of MySQL. Please consult the new “MySQL Container Project Log” to learn more about this new database architecture. Engineers are also requesting dialog with more beta users so please visit the aforementioned link if you are interested in participating.
- Improved Email Functionality. Numerous changes and patches made to the email sub-system including improved email delivery times, resolution of random duplicate email issue, virus scanning issues resolved, and improved MailProtect anti-SPAM recognition. An overhaul of the allow-lists envelope sender component, and new sender-verify override feature are also included.
- Improved FTP. Faster FTP connection setups, and improved overall transfer rates. Large FTP transfers include better connection handling and several other configuration enhancements.
- 400% increase in storage performance. Through various code optimizations and hardware reconfigurations, the GRID has achieved massive improvements in overall storage performance resulting in faster page load times, script execution, mail delivery, and a plethora of overall system benefits.
- Network Speed Increase. Reconfigured back-end network fabric that utilizes next generation hardware and software to improve speed and reliability of intercommunication between GRID segments. This results in a positive improvement across all applications.
- New Clustered DNS. Improves speed of internal name resolution within the GRID which results in overall performance enhancement in applications such as web, email, containers, etc.
- More and more.
- 25% faster control panel access.
- Enhanced CRON system.
- Reworked directory password protection tool resulting in better usability.
- New stable kernel releases installed along with custom patches to create a platform for future enhancements.
We hope that you enjoy the many improvements of (GMR v.1.2). (mt) Media Temple would like to thank all of the users that contributed feedback that lead to these improvements. Our customer’s direct feedback and experiences has been incredibly helpful and our systems are now more powerful and running better with your help. As always, we encourage users to continue telling us what you like, what you don’t like, and what you’d like to see in the future. GMR (v.1.3) is already in development and its release cycle is expected to be much shorter than (GMR v1.1) to (GMR v1.2).
Thank you again!

Great update. I can’t wait for 1.2. I knew you guys would overcome these issues and maintain your status as one of the best hosting providers out there.

Thank you! This is great. You were teasing me when I saw this post originally in my RSS reader a few days ago and then it disappeared :p

I hope this really does the trick. My website has been running slow as molasses lately and my FTP connections have been atrociously slow.

Wow. Impressive. Seems like a huge update. Hope everything will be updated smoothly. Good luck to you guys!

This is great news, thanks!
Will all customers get a MySQL GridContainer, or only those that need it?

Looking forward to this — Increased HTTP, MySQL, and FTP sounds incredible — albeit necessary at times, but definitely welcome.
Keep up the great work.

Hopefully the damage to Media Temple’s name done by the Grid can at least level off if you get this right. I’m a little irked that the MySQL Connections is now in the “Resolved” category a week before the fix is even in place. We’ll see if 1.2 actually makes this a reality. 1.1 didn’t. I truly hope 1.2 is the answer. For me, when MySQL crashes, the Grid crashes.

I’ve already witnessed some improvements over the past few days. Whether this is related to the upcoming upgrade, I’m not sure, but it was noticeable enough to blog about it. I’ve only been here almost two months now, and let me tell ya, I’m not going anywhere!
Sure, I’ve encountered a few random SQL errors when attempting to access my WordPress panel. FTP access has been less than stellar at times as well. However, as I’ve mentioned before, with anything new — it will NEVER be perfect out of the gates. We can test things ’til the cows come runnin’, but only time and patience will fix the most pressing things which arise from literally nowhere.
MT kicks serious ass.

This is the reason why I didn’t abandon ship. It has been tough dealing with the MySQL problems, but I knew MT would come through. Can’t wait to finally have reliable uptime service again!
Thanks for the hard work!!

[...] I really want to like Media Temple. I have friends that have been with them a couple years and love them. I’ve been there about 3 months just testing the waters. I moved my client access project management site there, and a group project based on Drupal and using subversion to keep from walking all over each other. First couple of weeks smooth as glass. After that, sluggish, lost mysql connections. These are the guys that host Nike and Starbucks among others. Granted, they aren’t on the poormans Gridserver I’m on, but still, there’s a reputation there. This place looked like the perfect place to do Ruby on Rails. You have an isolated container to run your apps, they have Mongrel so you don’t have to use FastCGI. Yup, it would be heaven if wasn’t for the awful lag that happens sometimes. I’ve sent and received quite a few emails that start like this. “So are you having problems with MT or is it just me?” Thank God I haven’t moved any client sites over there. Good hosting is really hard to find when you get down to it. I have two excellent ones right now, but neither of them have Ruby capabilities. So tonight was a happy night for myself and I’m sure several others. I received an email with a link to this press release. My fingers crossed, MT may actually have this Gridserver thing figured out. I’m hoping, and so are alot of other people. [...]

[...] Just a quick note to let everyone know that Plagiarism Today will likely be down for a few hours later this week. Our host, Media Temple, will be perfuming maintenance on the Grid Cluster System, upon which this site sits. [...]

Has the upgrade been completed? I haven’t seen any further mention of this apart from the delay in the MySQL Containers.

Wow! 1.2 has made a huge difference! My account center is now way faster and more responsive than before and my pages are loading much quicker. I Really appreciate all the work this must have taken.
