A tribe called Django and (mt) beta sign-up!
September 21st, 2007 at 3:07 pm
(mt) would like everyone to welcome their new neighbors; Django.
They’re purveyors of an incredible framework, have excellent musical taste, and are all-around great guys with a dedicated tribe. (mt) is über excited to provide them a fast, new, and spacious, online home. We, like many of you, want Django to grow and this was a perfect opportunity for (mt) to help.
We’ve also posted new beta information, and a sign-up(!), for our eagerly anticipated (mt) Django GridContainer.
So watch ya waiting for? Head over to (mt) labs right now and get your name in the hat.

Hi, guys. Do you plan to update your python version? Currently (2.3.5) it is a bit too old. I’m interested in your service, but with python 2.5 or at least 2.4…

Cool! I’m not sure I can join beta-testing program (although I have Python knowledge and experience with Django deploying, I have only one public application to host - my own blog, which is not very popular at the time) - and if I can, I’d like to do that (I just need to order my own (gs) and fill application?). But I have 1 question - pgsql is not yet available as choice for DB? I think it is something popular in django community…

Will MySQL be the only DB option? Or will there be a PostgreSQL option?

Awesome timing! Just last week I contacted Media Temple’s sales team to ask when Django service will be offered. Now with this news, I have more of a reason to switch to media Temple!

Last year you were talking about a Python container:
http://weblog.mediatemple.net/weblog/2006/12/04/grid-improvements-new-gmr-release/
Will we be able to run Trac in this container?

Thanks for the awesome feedback! Here are some quick answers;
Tony - you will be able to use MySQL or PostgreSQL.
Damien - We’re still looking into a Trac solution, we’re not planning on supporting it in this Container though.

Which version of DJango are you planning on running in the containers?
Will there be any choices in which versions are run .9x or CVS?
How often will upgrades be done to the containers? Can we choose to NOT upgrade to avoid some compatibility issues?
How many different DJango sites can you run in one (gs)?

good questions peridriga! here are some answers:
1) The newest release will be installed by default but you can switch to the what’s in their subversion repo using our tools.
2) We’re still working out all the details for upgrades. Given how easy it is for users to switch to newer releases, we expect that will be left for users to do.
3) You can install as many applications as you like. BUT, what we’re aiming at with the base container is that one application will run workably. If you want to install more, you’ll likely have to upgrade to a bigger container.
